Introducing Lynn-D By The Numbers

Yertle and Lynn-D Check Each Other Out

This week, Room 305B welcomed the newest member of our classroom:  Destroyer, a sibling of Yertle and Bowser (their mother is Turtle Number 2033).  Destroyer was very generously transferred from David Winchester and his students from Lynn Classical High School.  In honor of their generosity, the students decided to name the new turtle Lynn, and decided to honor the original name of Destroyer by a nickname of “D”  So, Destroyer is now known as Lynn-D in our classroom.  The two turtles have been getting to know one another.  Yertle has exhibited some of the behavior that Bowser use to do to him, but he has welcomed Lynn-D into the hideaway without any issue (this was a problem when Yertle had a playdate with Mrs. Dillon’s turtles the week we came back from vacation.)  The students are delighted to have Lynn-D in our tank.

So, now it’s time to check Lynn-D’s numbers out.  For this week’s blog, due on Thursday, you are to answer the following questions.  Make sure you answer in complete sentences and that you number your responses.  Remember that you can click on each image to make it larger.

March Weights for all 2010 Head Starts

A.    Take a look at the March weights that have been recorded for all the 2010 Hatchlings (note that the zoo turtles do not have names) and answer the following questions:

1. What is the range (in grams) of all of the turtles’ weights?

2.  Where does Lynn-D fall within this range?

3.  What is the difference between Lynn-D’s weight and the heaviest turtle (please use this turtles’ name or number)

4.  What is the difference between Lynn-D’s weight and the lightest turtle (please use this turtle’s name or number)

B.  Using the table below, please answer the following questions:

Turtle 2033's Hatchlings Information

1.  Based on the gender of all of 2033’s siblings (Bowser was also a male who weighed 85 grams in February), what do you predict Lynn-D’s gender to be?  How did you arrive at your hypothesis?

Part C:  Take a look at Lynn-D’s weights and lengths through the months and answer the questions associated with that table:

1.  How much weight has Lynn-D gained since the hatchling weight?

2.  How much longer has Lynn-D grown since the length at hatching?

3.  Between what two months was there the least amount of weight gained?  How much weight was gained during this time?

  1. A)
    1) The range of the turtles’ weights is 21.3 grams through 143 grams.
    2) Lynn-D falls into the smaller category weighing 42.3 grams.
    3) The difference between Lynn-D and Turtle 139 (the heaviest turtle) is 100.7 grams.
    4) The difference between Lynn-D and Strawberry (the lightest turtle) is 21 grams.
    B)
    1) I think that Lynn-D is a female because her weight is similar to the other females from Turtle 2033.
    C)
    1) Lynn-D has gained 33.23 grams since hatchling weight.
    2) Lynn-D is 23 millimeters longer since hatchling length.
    3) Lynn-D gained the least amount of weight between November and December. Lynn-D only gained 0.9 grams.
    4) Lynn-D gained the most weight between February and March. Lynn-D gained 17.1 grams.
    5) I predict that Lynn-D will weigh 59.4 grams in April because she gained 17.1 grams between February and March when she was in our classroom. I predict that Lynn-D will grow to be 70.6 millimeters in April because she grew 9.7 millimeters when she was with us last month.

  2. A1. What is the range (in grams) of all the turtles’ weights?
The range of all the turtles’ weights is from 21.3 (Strawberry) to 143.0 (#139) grams.
A2. Where does Lynn-D fall within this range?
Lynn-D is smaller than most of the Blanding’s turtles, weighing 42.3 grams.
A3. What is the difference between Lynn-D’s weight and the lightest turtle (please use this turtle’s name or number)?
The difference between Lynn-D’s weight and Strawberry (the lightest turtle) is 21.0 grams.
B1. Based on the gender of all 2033’s siblings (Bowser was also a male who weighed 85 grams in February), what do you predict Lynn-D’s gender to be? How did you arrive at your hypothesis?
I predict that Lynn-D is a female. I arrived at my hypothesis by seeing that the two females of Mother 2033 were 46.2 grams (Small Fry) and 43.9 grams (even though that was February) (Teddybear), and since Lynn-D is 42.3 grams, I predict that Lynn-D is a female.
C1. How much weight had Lynn-D gained since the hatchling weight?
Lynn-D has gained 33.23 grams since the hatchling weight.
C2. How much longer had Lynn-D grown since the length at hatching?
Lynn-D has grown 23 millimeters longer since the length at hatching.
C3. Between what two months was there the least amount of weight gained? How much weight was gained during this time?
Between November and December the least amount of weight was gained. There was only 0.9 grams gained.
C4. Between what two months was there the greatest amount of weight gained? How much weight was gained during this time?
Between February and March was the greatest amount of weight gained. There was 17.1 grams gained during that time.
C5. Based on Lynn-D’s growth chart, what do you predict Lynn-D’s weight and length to be on April 1st? How did you come up with your prediction?
I predict that Lynn-D will weigh around 50 to 55 grams and be 64-68 millimeters long on April 1st. I came up with my prediction by seeing that Lynn-D gained a lot of weight from February to March, almost 18 grams, so she would probably weigh around 55ish. For the length, I saw that Lynn-D grew a lot, too, so she would probably gain a lot more, and 66ish sounded good for 55ish grams.

  3. A.1-The range of all the turtles is 21.3 grams to 143 grams.
A.2-I think Lynn-D is nearer to the lighter turtles.
A.3-The difference is 100.7 grams because Lynn-D is 42.3 grams and turtle #139 (heaviest turtle) is 143 grams.
A.4-The difference between Lynn-D and the lightest turtle is 21 grams because Lynn-D is 42.3 grams and strawberry (lightest turtle) 21.3 grams.

B.1-I think that Lynn-D is a female because all the females weight about 40 grams and all the males weight at least 70 grams and since Lynn-D is 42.3 grams she is probably a female.

C.1-Lynn-D has gained 33.23 grams since hatching.
C.2-Lynn-D has grown 25 millimeters since hatching.
C.3-Between November and December was the least amount of weight gained. (0.9 grams gained).
C.4-Between February and March was the greatest amount of weight gained ( 17.1 grams gained).
C.5-Based on the growth chart I think that Lynn-D will be around 60 grams in weight and she will be around 70 millimeters in length on April 1st .

  4. A1. The range of all the turtles is 21.3 grams to 126 grams.

A2. I think Lynn-D is pretty low on the range of data. Most turtles were above 60 grams and the only reason the range went to 21.3 grams is because he was probably sick the turtle at 21.3 grams.

A3. Lynn-D’s weight compared to turtle 142’s weight is poor. Lynn-D weighs 42 grams and turtle 142 weighs 126 grams which is a big difference.

A4. Lynn-D’s weight compared to Strawberry’s weight is good. Lynn-D weighs 42 grams and Strawberry only weighs 21 grams which is almost scary how low that is.

    B. Based on Lynn-D’s siblings I think Lynn-D is a female because all the female’s weights were in the 40’s and Lynn-D’s is to and all the male weights are above 70 grams.

C1. Lynn-D has gained 32.6 grams since he was born.

C2. Lynn-D has grown 25 (mm) since he was born.

C3. Between October and November were the months that Lynn-D gained the least. He only gained 2.6 grams.

C4. Between January and February were the months Lynn-D gained the greatest amount of weight. He gained 25.1 grams.

C5. I think Lynn-D will be 68 grams because he is at his new home and will gain more because of that. Also because he will be in his new home for the whole month.

    • Sorry these are the questions I got wrong A1. The range is 21.3 grams to 143 grams, A3. Lynn-D’s weight compared to turtle 139 is poor because there is a 100.7 gram gap, C1. Lynn-D has gained 33.23 grams since hatching, C3. Between November and December he gained the least weight only 0.09 grams, C4. Between February and March he gained the most weight, C4. I predict Lynn-D will be 68 grams and 70 (mm) because he is living in his new home.

  5. A1) What is the range (in grams) of all of the turtles’ weights?

    A1) The range is from 21 (Strawberry)- 143 grams ( turtle 139.)

A2) Where does Lynn-D fall within this range?

A2) Lynn D. falls lower down because of her size and weight.

A3) What is the difference between Lynn-D’s weight and the heaviest turtle (please use this turtles’ name or number)

A3) The difference between Lynn D. and turtle 139 is 100.7 grams.

A4) What is the difference between Lynn-D’s weight and the lightest turtle (please use this turtle’s name or number)

A4) The difference between Strawberry and Lynn D. is 21 grams.

B1) Based on the gender of all of 2033′s siblings (Bowser was also a male who weighed 85 grams in February), what do you predict Lynn-D’s

B1) I think Lynn D. is a female because of how much the males way ( 71.1- 115 grams) and how little the females way ( 42.3-60.2 grams.)

C1) How much weight has Lynn-D gained since the hatchling weight?

C1) Lynn D. has gained 33.23 grams since birth.

C2) How much longer has Lynn-D grown since the length at hatching?

C2) Lynn D. has grown 23 millimeters since she was a hatchling.

C3) Between what two months was there the least amount of weight gained? How much weight was gained during this time?

C3) The two months that Lynn D. has grown the least amount are November and December. There was only 0.9 grams gained between then.

C4) Between what two months was there the greatest amount of weight gained? How much weight was gained during this time?

C4) She gained the most during February and March. She gained 17.1 grams.

C5) Based on Lynn-D’s growth chart, what do you predict Lynn-D’s weight and length to be on April 1st? How did you come up with your prediction?

C5) I think on April 1st she will weigh 53.5 grams. It is not to big of a weight or to small of a weight.

  6. A.
    1. The range is 21.3 grams – 143 grams.
    2. Lynn-D is the third lightest.
    3. The difference between the heaviest turtle at 143 grams (turtle number 139 at the zoo) and Lynn-D is 121.7 grams.
    4. The difference between the lightest turtle at 21.3 grams (Strawberry the turtle) and Lynn-D is 21grams.
    B.
    1. I think that Lynn-D is a female because all of the other turtles that weigh in the forty grams range are females so this leads me to believe that Lynn-D is a female too.
    C.
    1. Lynn-D has gained 32.6 grams since he/she hatched.
    2. Lynn-D has grown 25mm since he/she hatched
    3. Between November 1st and December 1st, Lynn-D gained the least amount of weight, she/he only gained 0.9 of a gram.
    4. Between Feb 1st and March 1st, Lynn-D gained the most amount of weight. He/she gained 17.1 grams during this period of time.
    5. On April 1st I think that Lynn-D will weigh 60 grams. The reason I think this is because between Jan. 1st and Feb. 1st Lynn-D gained around 17 grams and then gained a similar amount between the period of Feb 1st and March 1st. Assuming she continues this trend I predict that Lynn-D will weigh approximately 60 grams as of April 1st.

    • Sorry, I meant I for question A3 the difference really is 100.1 grams and for question C1 I meant she has gained 33.26 grams.

  7. A1) The range (in grams) of all of the turtles’ weights is from 21.3 grams to 143 grams.
A2) Lynn-D is in the smaller category at 42.3 grams.
A3) The difference between Lynn-D’s weight and turtle 139 (the heaviest turtle hatchling) is 100.7 grams.
A4) The difference between Lynn-D’s weight and Strawberry (the lightest turtle) is 21 grams.
B1) I predict Lynn-D’s gender to be female. The reason I think that is because Lynn-D’s weight is very close to the other weights of her female siblings.
C1) Lynn-D has gained 33.23 grams since she was a hatchling.
C2) Lynn-D has grown 23 millimeters longer since hatching.
C3) Between November and December there was the least amount of weight gained. During this time only .9 grams were gained.
C4) Between February and March there was the greatest amount of weight gained. During this time 17.1 grams were gained.
C5) I think Lynn-D will be 59.4+ grams because she gained 17.1 grams last time. I also think she will be 70.6+ millimeters because last month she gained 9.7 millimeters.

  8. A 1. The range of the 2010 hatchling’s turtles is 21.3 grams – 125.6 grams.

A 2. I think Lynn-D falls on the lighter side of this range.

A 3. The difference between Lynn-D and the heaviest turtle (turtle 139) is 101.3 grams.

A 4. The difference between Lynn-D and the lightest turtle (Strawberry) is 21 grams.

B 1. I think that Lynn-D is a female because the other females from turtle 2033 are around the same exact weight.

C 1. Lynn-D has gained 33.4 grams was gained since February first.

C 2. Lynn-D has gained exactly 25 grams since hatching.

C 3. The least amount of weight gained in a period of 1 month was from November 1st to December 1st. 0.9 grams was gained during that time.

C 4. The most amount of weight gained in a period of 1 month was from February 1st to March 1st. 18.1 grams was gained during that time.

C 5. I think Lynn-D will weigh about 60 grams next month. I think that because of how much weight he/she has gained since last month. I think he/she will be about 75 millimeters next month. I think that because of how much millimeters he/she has gained last month and because of the rate he/she is growing at.

  9. Question 1.) The range of all the turtles’ weights are 143.0-21.3=121.7.
Question 2.) Lynn-D falls within this range because she’s the lightest.
Question 3.) The difference between Lynn-D’s weight and the heaviest turtle’s weight is 100.7 grams. The heaviest turtle’s number is 139.
Question 4.) The difference between Lynn-D’s weight and the lightest turtle’s weight is 21.0 grams. Lynn-D’s weight – 42.3 grams. Other turtle- 21.3 grams. The other turtle’s name is Strawberry.
I think Lynn-D is a girl. I thought that because, I usually think that girls, are smaller than boys. So that why I came up with that answer.
Question 1.) Lynn-D has gained 3.26 grams since the length at hatching.
Question 2.) Lynn-D has grown 25.0 M.M. since the length at hatching.
Question 3.) The two months that she gained the least was October 1st and November 1st. During this time she gained 1.7 grams.
Question 4.) The two months that she gained the much weight was March 1st and October 1st. She gained 29.2 grams during this time.
Question 5.) I think that Lynn-D will be 61.5 grams in April. I came up with this prediction because I noticed a pattern in the listings of the grams. The first numbers on the right side had a pattern it went 5, 9, 5, 8, 2, and 9. Then when the graph ended, I looked up to the top of the graph, saw a number, the number was 5. So I’m going to use that for part of my answer. On the left side, I noticed that the numbers had a pattern too; the pattern went 35, 41, 42, 45, 4, 51, and 60. Then, I looked over at the 1’s column; it had a 5, 1, 2, 5, 4, 1, and a 0. When the graph ended, I looked at the last number, and I used that number for part of my answer. The number was 60. Then I used the 5 that I got from the beginning. Then I used the 60 that I got at the end, and then put them all together. I ended up with 60.5 grams.

  10. A
    1. The range for all the turtle hatchling’s weight in March is
    21.3 -144 grams.

    C
    1. Lynn-D has gained 32.6 (g) since her hatchling weight.
    2. Lynn-D has grown 25.0 (mm) since her hatchling length.
    3. Between the months of November – December, Lynn-D gained 0.9 grams during this time.
    4. Between the months of February–March, Lynn-D gained 17.1 grams during this time.
    5. I think Lynn-D will gain 8.5 grams between March 1 and April 1. I think this because 8.5 is the median between the biggest and smallest weight gained.

    • Forgot this.
I think Lynn-D will grow 2.6 (mm) between March 1 and April 1. I think this because 2.6 is the median between the longest and shortest length gained.

      • Corrections…
