Comparing 2009 and 2010 Hatchling December Weights in Grams

I selected 14 turtles from 2009 Hatchling data and 2010 Hatchling data to analyze their weights at the beginning of December.  You can click on the table to make it larger.

For Thursday, please analyze the data and answer the following questions.  Make sure you use answer in complete sentences and that you LABEL your answers  and  use grams in your response.

  1. A) The range of the 2009 hatchlings’ weights in December starts at 16 grams and goes to 40 grams.
    B) The range of the 2010 hatchlings’ weights in December is from 13 grams to 71 grams.
    C) The median weight for the 2009 hatchlings is 26 1/2 grams.
    D) The median weight for the 2010 hatchlings is 36 1/2 grams.
    E) Yertle and Bowser are above the median for 2010. Yertle is the lightest turtle in the group of turtles that are higher than the median.
    F) Yertle and Bowser are both heavier than every ‘09 turtle at their age. Bowser is 4 grams heavier than the heaviest ‘09 turtle, and Yertle is 3 grams heavier than the highest weight.
    G) I think there is a difference between the 2009 and 2010 December hatchling weights because maybe this year the food appeals more to the turtles or they are healthier turtles so they eat more.

    e)Yertle is the 8th heaviest turtle and Bowser is the 9th heaviest as compare to the other 2o1o turtles.

    f)They are heavier than all the 2oo9 hatchlings’.

    g)Maybe because they got healthier food in their diet.It can also be that since they were born earlier they got more time to grow and eat,so maybe it is because of that.

    C. The median of the 2009 hatchling weights of December is 26 1/2 grams.

    D. The median of the 2010 hatchling weights of December is 36 ½ grams.

    E. Yertle and Bowser compared to the 2009 hatchling weights of December are doing very well because they weigh the most grams out of all the turtles.

    F. Yertle and Bowser compared to the 2010 hatchling weights of December are about the middle weight. I say this because they are only 6 ½ grams from the median weight.

    G. I think there is a difference from the 2009 hatchling weights of December and the 2010 hatchling weights of December because the people taking care of the turtles have more knowledge about the turtles. And if they have more knowledge they can feed the turtles better so they can gain more weight and be healthier.

    c) The median of hatchling weights for 2009 is 27.5 grams.
    d) The median of hatchling weights for 2010 is 36.5 grams.
    e) Yertle and Bowser’s weights are a little bit over the median and are about in the middle of the range of weights for the 2010 hatchlings.
    f) Yertle and Bowser’s weights are both over the highest turtle weight in 2009 and much higher than the median weight for 2009.
    g) I think that there is a difference in hatchling weight for 2009 and 2010 because the turtles for 2010 probably ate more than the turtles in 2009.

    B) The range of the 2010 turtles weight is from 13 grams to 71 grams.

    C) The median turtle weight for 2009 is 26 1/2 grams.

    D) The median turtle weight for 2010 is 36 1/2 grams.

    E) Yertle and Bowser compared to the 2010 turtles are a bit heavier than the median weight but they look like they are around the middle weight.

    F) Yertle and Bowser are heavier than all of the turtles by 3 or 4 grams (Bowser 4 grams heavier and Yertle 3 grams heavier). I am surprised that none of the turtles from 2009 are heavier than them because the lightest turtle from 2010 weighs 13 grams and he is lighter by 3 grams than the lightest turtle from 2009.

    G) I think there is a difference between the 2009 and 2010 turtle weights because maybe the people who took care of the turtles did not keep the tank warm enough so the turtles didn’t move around as much so they didn’t get as hungry and were lighter than the 2010 turtles weight’s in December.

  6. a. The range of 2009 Blanding’s turtle hatchlings weights is 16 grams – 40 grams.

    b. The range of 2010 Blanding’s turtle hatchlings weights is 13 grams – 71 grams.

    c. The median weight of Blanding’s turtle hatchlings in 2009 is 26 ½ grams.

    d. The median weight of Blanding’s turtle hatchlings in 2010 is 36 ½ grams.

    e. Yertle weighs 43 grams and Bowser weighs 44 grams. Yertle and Bowser both weigh more than the 2010 turtle hatchling median (36 ½ grams). But neither of them weighs close to the highest weight (71 grams). So they weigh more than average but not the most.

    f. Yertle and Bowser weigh more than any of the 2009 turtle hatchlings. The 2009 turtle hatchlings weigh less than the 2010 turtle hatchlings. Bowser weighs

    g. I think that the only difference between the 2010 and the 2009 Blanding’s turtle hatchlings is their weight. The 2009 Blanding’s turtle hatchlings weigh less than the 2010 Blanding’s turtle hatchlings. I think that, that is a combination of both, the parents are healthier and the children and teachers are more experienced with Blanding’s turtles. I also think that the turtles are just hungrier.

    C) The 2009 data median is 26 1/2.
    D) The 2010 data median is 36 1/2.
    E) Compared to 2010 group Yertle and Bowser are doing very well most of the turtles are the same weight so that’s good because it is normal.
    F) They compare to the 2009 group because they are over the high weight during the same time period.
    G) I think there is a difference because maybe they were feeding them different food, I also think it is because they feed them 4 times a day.

    D.The 2010 turtle data weight median is 43grams.

    E.I can compare Bowser and Yerttle to the turtle sample 2010 by that their both near the middle.

    F.I can compare Bowser and Yerttle to the turtle sample 2009 by their both do weigh more than them the turtle sample 2009.

    G.I think we found more information and actually learned whats good for them and that helped the Blanding’s turtle grow bigger and faster.

    B. The range for the 2010 turtle hatchlings data in December is 13-71g.

    C. The median weight for the 2009 turtle hatchlings in December is 26.5g.

    D. The median weight for the 2010 turtle hatchlings in December is 36.5g.

    E. The average of the turtle hatchling weight is 37.8g which means that Yertle and Bowser are a little bit on the bigger side which is good.

    F. Yertle and Bowser weigh more than the highest weight in the 2009 hatchling turtles because the range for the turtles in 2009 is 16-40g and Yertle and Bowser weigh 43 and 44grams.

    G. I think the years are different because there are different people feeding the turtles. Last year in 2009 the zoo, CCHS, Carlisle, the Aquarium and Alcott had the turtles. Whereas, this year in 2010, Thoreau, Alcott, Willard and the Zoo feed them. So I think all the different schools, places and people could have fed them different amounts. We feed them 20 pellets and if they finish them we give them 20 more pellets. Other people in different classes might feed them different numbers of pellets.

  10. A) The 2009 range for turtle weight in December is 16 grams to 40 grams.
    B) The 2010 range for turtle weight in December is 13 grams to 71 grams.
    C) The median for 2009 turtle weight is 26 1/2 grams.
    D) The median for 2010 turtle weight is 36 1/2 grams.
    E) Yertle and Bowser compared to the 2010 turtles are heavier than most of the turtles which is really good. When you look at it on a line plot, though, they seem around middle.
    F) Yertle and Bowser compared to the 2009 turtles are the heaviest of them all. Every other turtle is below 40 grams, and Yertle and Bowser are 43 grams and 44 grams.
    G) I think there is a difference between the 2009 turtles and the 2010 turtles because people didn’t know as much about the turtles as they do now. They probably didn’t know how much to feed them, so they were feeding too little, they probably didn’t know how high to heat the tank up, so the turtles were probably cold. We feed them 20 pellets and then another 20 pellets, and keep going until they look bored. They probably fed them not a lot, maybe something like 20 pellets and then 10 pellets and then that’s it. I think we just know more now about Blanding’s turtles.

    e. Yertle and Bowser compared to the 2010 hatchling turtles Yertle and Bowser’s weight of 43 and 44 grams are right about in the middle.

    f. Yertle and Bowser’s weight compared to 2009 turtles is much higher, sometimes more than double the weight of some of the 2009 turtles so they must be healthy.

    g. I think the weights are different because maybe of the different environments they lived in like 2009 turtles were raised mostly at CCHS and 2010 turtles were raised in the elementary schools and zoos. Also maybe they had different food and diets.

  12. A. The range of the 2009 turtle weights in December is 16 grams to 40 grams.

    B. The range of the 2010 turtle weights in December is 13 grams to 61 grams.

    C. The median weight for the 2009 weights of the turtles is 26 1/2 grams.

    D. The median weight for the 2010 weights of the turtles is 36 1/2 grams.

    E. Yertle and Bowser compare to the other turtles pretty well because they’re no where near 13 grams and pretty close to 61 so they’re a little bit more than the median so I think they are a good size compared to most of the other turtles.

    F. Yertle and Bowser would have the highest weight on the chart if they were in the 2009 data because the highest weight in the 2009 data without Yertle and Bowser is 40 grams and Yertle weighs 43 grams and Bowser weighs 44 grams so they would have the highest weight.

    G. I think there is a difference between the 2009 data and the 2010 data because in 2009 they might have used a different kind of food than what we use now or they might have thought that the turtles were supposed to get not that many pellets so they won’t get a stomach ache or get too fat.

  13. A-The range of the 2009 turtles in December is 16 to 40 grams.

    B-The range of the 2010 turtles in December is 13 to 17 grams.

    C-The median of the 2009 turtles is 26.5 grams.

    D-The median of the 2010 turtles is 36.5 grams.

    E-Yertle and Bowser compare to the 2010 turtles because they are one of the biggest which is very good.

    f-Yertle and Bowser compare to the 2009 turtles because the 2009 turtles are less than 40 grams but Yertle and Bowser are 43 and 44.

    G-I think there is a difference in the temperature which effects the turtles.

  14. The range of weights for the 2009 Blanding’s turtles is 16 to 40 grams.
    The range of weights for the 2010 Blanding’s turtles is 13 to 71 grams.
    The median for the 2009 Blanding turtle’s weights was 26.5 grams.
    The median for the 2010 Blanding’s turtle’s weights was 31.5 grams.
    Yertle and Bowser are about average weights for the 2010 Program.
    Yertle and Bowser would have be the heaviest turtles in the program.
    Also, they would have been about twice average size for December weights.
    I think the 2010 weights are double the amount of the 2009 weight because we know more about Blanding turtles and we know how to take care of them.

    B. What is the range of the 2010 hatchlings’ weights in December? The range of the 2010 hatchling’s weights is 13 grams to 71 grams.

    C. What is the median weight for the 2009 hatchlings? The median weight for the 2009 hatchling’s is 26 grams.

    D. What is the median weight for the 2010 hatchlings? The median weight for the 2010 hatchling’s is 36.5 grams.

    E. How do Yertle and Bowser compare to the sample of the 2010 hatchlings? These are a couple of comparisons that I made between Bowser,Yertle, and the rest of the 2010 hatchlings: Bowser is in fifth heaviest turtle in the group. Yertle is in sixth
    heaviest. All together Bowser and Yertle are on the heavier half of the 2010 hatchlings.
    The lowest weights are from Stonham Zoo and Lynn Classical HS and we (C.P.S.) have higher amounts. Even though the Zoo has the heaviest turtle it is ruled out because of the other low weight(18 grams).

    G. How do Yertle and Bowser compare to the 2009 December hatchling weights? The following comparisons are from Bowser and Yertle’s weight to
    the 2009 hatchling’s weight. Both Bowser and Yertle weigh more than the heaviest turtle from 2009. Bowser and Yertle’s weights are 4 grams (Bowser) and 3 grams (Yertle) heavier than the heaviest 2009 hatchling.

    G. Why do you think there is a difference between the 2009 and 2010 December hatchling weights?
    I think there is a difference between the 2009 weights and the 2010 weights because in 2010 people were more familiar with the project than in 2009. This could effect the turtles weights because if they didn’t know the right amount of food to give them then they wouldn’t weigh as much. Another reason is if they didn’t feed them frequently enough so they wouldn’t eat as much.

  16. A) The range of the 2009 data is 16 grams- 40 grams.
    B) The range for the 2010 data is 13 grams- 71 grams.
    C) The median for the 2009 data is 26 grams.
    D) The median for the 2010 data is 30 grams
    E) Yertle and Bowser were both higher than the 2010 median. Yertle is 13 grams higher and Bowser is 14 grams higher than the median.
    F) For the 2009 data Yertle is 17 grams higher than the median and Bowser is 18 grams higher than the 2009 median.
    G) I think that there is a difference between the 2009 data and the 2010 data because os maybe warmer weather in 2010. Sometimes warmer weather will make the turtles eat more and when they eat more they will gain more weight.

    C.) The median weight for the 2009 hatchling weights is: 26 1/2 grams.
    D.) The median weight for the 2010 hatchling weights is: 36 1/2 grams.
    E.) The two groups of turtles compare because the average turtle weight for both years is around the same number.
    F.) I think there is a difference because we have learned more about them and might take better care of them.

    B. The range of the 2010 December hatchlings is from 13 grams and ends at 71 grams.

    C. The median of the 2009 December hatchlings is 26 ½ grams.

    E. Yertle is the median of the hatchlings data.

    F. Yertle and Bowser are both bigger then the 2009 biggest turtle.

    G. Maybe because this year we’ve fed the turtles more and have been more focused on them.

  19. a. The range for the weights of the hatchlings in 2009 is 16-40 grams.
    b. The range for the weights of the hatchlings in 2010 is 13-71 grams.

    c. The median for the weights of the hatchlings in 2009 is 26.5 grams.
    d. The median for the weights of the hatchlings in 2010 is 36.5 grams.

    e. Compared to the other hatchlings in 2010, Yertle and Bowser are kind of on the heavier side but they are also pretty close to the median and the median is 36.5 grams.

    f. Compared to the hatchlings in 2009, they are a lot heavier because they are heavier than the heaviest turtle and that is 40 grams and Yertle is 43 grams and Bowser is 44 grams so they are definitely a lot heavier.

    g. It think there is a difference between the weights of the hatchlings in 2009 and 2010 because they might have been eating other things than what we feed them now and maybe they eat what we feed them now better than if the other food if there was a other food.

    E.I think that Yertle and Bowser(in weights) are at the very bottem of the 2010 heavy group.

    F.Yertle and Bowser would be the heaviest in 2009.

    G.I think the 2010 hatchlings are heavier because GLOBAL WARMING made them hatch earlier so they ate more.
